A Term Rewriting System for Kuratowski's Closure-Complement Problem

چکیده
We present a term rewriting system to solve a class of open problems that are generalisations of Kuratowski’s closure-complement theorem. The problems are concerned with finding the number of distinct sets that can be obtained by applying combinations of axiomatically defined set operators. While the original problem considers only closure and complement of a topological space as operators, it can be generalised by adding operators and varying axiomatisation. We model these axioms as rewrite rules and construct a rewriting system that allows us to close some so far open variants of Kuratowski’s problem by analysing several million inference steps on a typical personal computer. 1998 ACM Subject Classification G.2.1 Combinatorics

Closures in Formal Languages and Kuratowski's Theorem
A famous theorem of Kuratowski states that in a topological space, at most 14 distinct sets can be produced by repeatedly applying the operations of closure and complement to a given set. We re-examine this theorem in the setting of formal languages, where closure is either Kleene closure or positive closure. We classify languages according to the structure of the algebra they generate under it...

متن کاملOn Forward Closure and the Finite Variant Property
Equational unification is an important research area with many applications, such as cryptographic protocol analysis. Unification modulo a convergent term rewrite system is undecidable, even with just a single rule. To identify decidable (and tractable) cases, two paradigms have been developed — Basic Syntactic Mutation [14] and the Finite Variant Property [6]. Inspired by the Basic Syntactic M...
متن کاملApproximation-based Tree Regular Model-Checking
This paper addresses the following general problem of tree regular model-checking: decide whether R * (L) ∩ L p = ∅ where R * is the reflexive and transitive closure of a successor relation induced by a term rewriting system R, and L and L p are both regular tree languages. We develop an automatic approximation-based technique to handle this – undecidable in general – problem in most practical ...
متن کاملDeciding Confluence of Certain Term Rewriting Systems in Polynomial Time
We present a polynomial time algorithm for deciding confluence of ground term rewrite systems. We generalize the decision procedure to get a polynomial time algorithm, assuming that the maximum arity of a symbol in the signature is a constant, for deciding confluence of rewrite systems where each rule contains a shallow linear term on one side and a ground term on the other. The existence of a ...
